Cards outside a shape count against you: picture cards ten, Ace one.
Knock at ten or less to end the hand; leave nothing over and you have gin.
Gin rummy is a card game for two. You each get ten cards, then take turns drawing one and throwing one away, trying to group your hand into sets of a rank (7♦ 7♥ 7♠) and runs in one suit (4♣ 5♣ 6♣). Whatever doesn't fit is deadwood. Once yours adds up to 10 or less you can knock and end the hand, and with nothing left over you have gin. One hand, counted
You hold 4♣ 5♣ 6♣ 7♣, 9♦ 9♥ 9♠ and three loose cards: A♠ 2♦ 4♥.
The loose cards come to 1 + 2 + 4 = 7. That is 10 or less, so you knock.
Your opponent shows 26 deadwood, then lays off their 8♣ on the end of your clubs run. They are left with 18.
You score the difference, 18 minus 7: 11 points. First to 100 takes the game.
Scoring in short
differencea knock scores your opponent's deadwood minus yours+25for gin (no deadwood at all), plus their full deadwood+25to your opponent for an undercut, if they tie or beat your count100points wins the game, then 25 per hand won and 100 for the game go on top
Any card not part of a set or run. Aces count 1, face cards 10, everything else its number. Get the total to 10 or less and you can knock.
What's an undercut?
You knock, but after laying off your opponent's deadwood is equal to yours or lower. They take the difference plus a 25-point bonus, so knocking on 9 or 10 carries a real risk.
