What is Spades?

Spades is a four-player partnership card game from the United States. You and the player across from you bid how many of the 13 tricks your team will take, then try to take exactly that many, with spades always trump. Make the bid and you score 10 points a trick; miss it and you lose the same. Play Spades online free against bots on four levels, Easy to Expert, or with friends in a private room, no account needed.

How a hand works

  1. Everyone gets 13 cards and bids the tricks they expect to win, from Nil (zero) up to 13. Your bid and your partner's add together.
  2. The player left of the dealer leads. Follow suit whenever you can.
  3. Spades beat everything, but you can't lead them until they've been "broken".
  4. Make your team's combined bid and you score it; fall short and it's taken away.
  5. Hands repeat until a team reaches 500 points (Quick Match plays to 250).

Scoring at a glance

10 × bidfor making your combined bid, and minus the same for getting set +1per overtrick, but each one banks a "bag" −100when your team collects its tenth bag ±100for a Nil bid, made or broken

Common questions

What exactly is a bag?
An overtrick: a trick beyond your bid. Each is worth a point, but bank ten and your team loses 100. That's why it pays to bid what your hand is actually worth.
Should I ever bid Nil?
When your hand has two or fewer low spades and a small card in most suits. A made Nil scores 100 and a failed one costs 100. Our Nil guide covers which hands can hold one.
Can I play Spades online with friends?
Yes. Create a private room, share the code, and fill the other seats with friends or bots.
How do you play Spades with 2 people?
Spades is a four-player game, but two of you can still play online together: invite your friend to a private room and bots fill the other two seats. With a real deck, here is how to play Spades with 2 people head to head.
Do I need to download anything?
No. Spades runs right in your browser, on a computer or a phone, with nothing to install.
